In the Dark Series
I created the "In the Dark" series to explore how figures emerge from darkness, revealing themselves through minimal illumination. Working with dark paper and white charcoal, I focus on the precise moments where light touches a face and brings it forward from the void.
Each portrait begins as a shadowy expanse, with the white charcoal acting as light itself—not just representing it, but functioning as the revealing force. I'm drawn to the technical challenge of using negative space actively, letting the darkness hold its own weight in the composition.
The mystery of partial revelation drives this series—what remains hidden often tells as much of the story as what's illuminated.
